Tocllaraju is one og the most beautiful mountains in the range.  It is a challnging peak.  Yet not too difficult for a first 6,000m peack.  Adventurous yet moderate ice climbing, and an exposed ridge lead to a perfect Summit.  This classic two-day mountaneering adventure is not to be missed.

First Ascent:  July 31, 1939, by W. Brecht, H. Schweizer.

Elevation Gain:  1,632m from Ishinca base camp (Refugio). 1,32 from high camp.

Grade: D (Due to the difficulties of the Summit pyramid)

Time:  4 days roundtrip from Huaraz city; 7 – 9 hours from high camp to Summit.

Equipment:  Crampons, 02 technical ice axes, 02 60m ropes, 03 ice crews and  4 snow pickets.

Day 1: Huaraz city - Ishinca Refugio 4,300m
Climbing Mt. Tocllaraju in the Cordillera Blanca of Peru is an exciting adventure. Here's a detailed itinerary for a 4-day climb with 3 nights:
  • Arrive in Huaraz, Peru, preferably a day before the climb to acclimatize.
  • Final equipment check: Ensure all climbing gear is in top condition. - Meet with your guide and team members for a briefing.
Day 1: Morning:
  • We drive from Huaraz to the trailhead at Ishinca Valley (approx. 1 hour).
  •  We start trekking from the trailhead to Ishinca Base Camp (4,300 meters/14,108 feet).
  •  We stay at Ishinca Base Camp Refugio  and have an early dinner. - Rest and acclimatize for the climb ahead.

Day 2: Adventure Beggins: Ishinca Refugio Camp - High Camp
Morning:
  • We Wake up early, have breakfast, and pack your climbing gear.
  • We begin the ascent from Ishinca Base Camp to High Camp on Tocllaraju (5,200 meters/17,060 feet).
  •  The ascent typically takes 4-6 hours depending on weather and group pace.
  • We arrive at High Camp and set up tents.
  • Rest, hydrate, and have an early dinner.

Day 3: Getting Summit
Day 3: Summit Day:
  • We wake up in the early hours of the morning (around 1 AM).
  • We have a light breakfast and prepare your climbing gear.
  • We start the summit push, aiming to reach the summit of Mt. Tocllaraju (6,032 meters/19,790 feet).
  • The climb involves technical sections, including glacier travel and possibly some ice climbing.
  • After 9 hours we reach the summit and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Cordillera Blanca.
  • We descend back to High Camp carefully.
Afternoon:
  • We arrive back at High Camp, pack up your gear, and descend to Ishinca Base Camp.
  •  we have a hearty meal and celebrate your successful summit.
  •  Rest and recover at Ishinca Refugio Base Camp.

Day 4: Return
Day 4: Morning:
  • Wake up at Ishinca Refugio Base Camp.
  • We have breakfast and break down camp.
  • We begin the trek back to the trailhead at Ishinca Valley.
  • We meet our transportation and drive back to Huaraz.
Afternoon:
  • We arrive in Huaraz city.
  • Debrief with your guide, return any rented equipment, and say goodbye to your team members.
  • Optional: Celebratory dinner in Huaraz to conclude the expedition.
This itinerary provides a well-paced ascent, allowing for proper acclimatization and maximizing your chances of a successful summit bid. However, keep in mind that climbing conditions and weather can vary, so flexibility is essential. It's also crucial to listen to your guide's advice throughout the climb for safety reasons.
